Thulabharam is offered seeking a relief from distress, for achieving a dream or deliverance from an ailment. As per belief, it was shri hari Krishna who conducted the ritual for the first time. Krishna sat on one platform of the balance.
Symbolic meaning of Tulabharam is that the person performing the ritual is offering himself or herself to Lord or Mother goddess. The person performing the ritual prays that he/she is offering his/her body to the Lord and then offers a puja item or an item used in the temple equivalent to the weight of the person.

 30 million Gods? The Vedas refer to not millions of deities but 33 supreme deities. 33 crore Gods? A popular but unfounded belief has been spread that Hindus have 33 crore gods. It is a misunderstanding of the Vedic concept of the State, and hence a misinterpretation of the word koti.  33 divinities are mentioned in the Yajur-veda, Atharva-veda, Satapatha-brahmana, and in several other Vedic and later texts. The number thirty-three occurs with reference to divinities in the Parsi scriptures of Avesta as well.The expression trayastrimsa deva is found in the list of classes of gods in Sanskrit Buddhist texts like the Divyavadana and Suvarnaprabhasa-sutra. The Arthashastra, written in Sanskrit and dating back to the time of the Mauryan Empire, is one of the oldest books on governance, military strategy, politics, economics, justice, and the duties of rulers. Scholars say it was composed around the second century BCE. Its author, Kautilya—also known as Chanakya— was prime minister to Chandragupta, the first of the Mauryan rulers. After the decline of the Mauryan Empire, the document was lost. Rudrapatna Shamashastri, a Sanskrit scholar and librarian, discovered the original Arthashastra in 1905 among the mounds of palm leaf documents lying in the institute, which was founded by Mysore’s Wodeyar kings in 1891. The institute has been part of the University of Mysore from 1916, and is home to about 70,000 rare palm-leaf manuscripts.
